April 19-26

Watchword for the week:

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation.” 1 Peter 1:3

The watchword is meant to be with you through the week encouraging you, challenging you and bringing you closer to your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The newest information we have dealing with the COVID-19 Virus and our governing authorities’ suggestions, extends our cancellation of all activities at First Baptist Church until May 3.

They will include: The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, the 16th Street Baptist Church, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Edmond Pettus Bridge, the Rosa Parks Museum and Library, The Civil Rights Memorial Center, The Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Seating is limited. Singles $1,786, doubles $1,360. Price includes: Deluxe motor coach transportation, 6 nights lodging, 6 breakfasts, 6 kickbacks, 3 dinners, all admissions, taxes, gratuities. Begin praying about your participation. Questions? Ask either Claudette or Tim Bees.

OCC Garage Sale [June 5-6]

We have planned to hold a garage sale designed to raise funds for Operation Christmas Child. Why does this ministry need funding? For shipping costs of boxes packed and additional items to pack in the boxes. Start gathering stuff.

Weekly Scripture Meditation: [4.26.2020]

The Church, as a whole, is invited to participate in reading and meditating on the lectionary texts for the upcoming Sunday. The texts for Sunday, April 26 are as follows:

Luke 24:13-35; Psalm 116:1-4, 12-19; 1 Peter 1:17-23; Acts 2:14a, 13-35.

“Breathe on Me, Breath of God”

  1. Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew,

that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do.

  1. Breathe on me, Breath of God, until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will, to do and to endure.
  2. Breathe on me, Breath of God, till I am wholly thine, till all this earthly part of me glows with thy fire divine.
  3. Breathe on me, Breath of God, so shall I never die, but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.

[Edwin Hatch, John 20:22]

Forever Beginnings by Donald J. Shelby

“Meeting [Jesus] does not inevitably lead to his becoming our personal savior. We must make room in our life for him; we must choose him and accept him as our savior by claiming his presence. We must let him be Lord of our lives. That decision involves opening ourselves to Jesus, and receiving him into the most intimate dimensions of our lives. Because Jesus comes to us in love, he refuses to exploit or manipulate us, to be coercive or invasive, for to do so would contradict the very nature of love.”
