Our Daily Bread
The December, January, February issue of “Our Daily Bread” is now available for free in the foyer. This handy guide to the Bible allows the reader to pause each day and think upon the things of God. It is a simple devotional that will bring you blessings.
Weekly Scripture Meditation:
We are inviting the Church as a whole to participate in reading and meditating on the lectionary texts for the upcoming Sunday. The texts for Sunday, December 23 are as follows: Luke 1:39-45, [46-55], Micah 5:2-5, Psalm 80:1-7, Hebrews 10:5-10. The verse in bold will be the sermon text for that Sunday.
The Season of Advent
Advent is a season of waiting, longing, promise, and preparation. The year, the season begins with the words of hope from the prophet Jeremiah to a people who feel helpless. “A righteous branch will spring up!” he proclaims. Advent reminds us that even as we remember all that God has done for us, we still long for a time when the brokenness of our world will be transformed into the fullness of God’s reign.
Godly Play [12.21.2018]
Godly Play Group will be meeting at FBC on December 21st, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. This month’s focus will be advent from Luke 2. To join the circle, children must be 5 to 12 years old and be registered using the FBC enrolment form. The Godly Play Approach helps children to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience through wonder and play. Godly Play is based on Montessori principles using a spiral curriculum. Contact Christine Quintana at 563-583-4623 for more information. Group size is limited but we have a few more spaces available.
Advent Bible Study
During the Season of Advent, the pastor will lead a Bible study of the response texts found in the Lectionary. The study will begin at 6:00 p.m. each Sunday evening and will last for one hour. A printed copy of the text will be supplied, but it is suggested that each participant bring a Bible. If you don’t have one the Church will supply one for you. Here are the remaining dates and topics:
December 16: Zephaniah 3:14-20
December 23: Psalm 80:1-7
The goal of this study is to allow us to meditate and think upon the texts that the Church has held sacred for this Advent/Christmas Season.

“God presents himself to us little by little. The whole story of salvation is the story of God who comes.
It is always he who comes, even if he has not yet come in his fullness. But there is indeed one unique moment in his coming; the others were only preparations and announcement.
The hour of his coming is the incarnation.
The incarnation brings the world his presence. It is a presence so complete that it overshadows every presence before it.
God is made human in Christ. God makes himself present to us with such a special presence, such an obvious presence, as to overthrow all complicated calculations made about him in the past.
The invisible, intangible God has made himself visible and tangible in Christ.
If Jesus is truly God, everything is clear; if I cannot believe this, everything darkens again.”
